Aerial view of the Cancun Hotel Zone between lagoon and sea

The areas in brief

Hotel Zone north (km 3 to 9)

Calmer water facing Isla Mujeres. Good for families and swimmers.

Party Center (around km 9)

Clubs, bars and restaurants within walking distance. Lively and noisy at night.

Hotel Zone south (km 12 to 22)

Big resorts, open-sea waves and dramatic beaches. More isolated, quieter evenings.

Downtown (El Centro)

Real city life, local food and lower prices. You will need a bus or taxi to the beach.

Costa Mujeres

Newer all-inclusive resorts north of the city. Peaceful, but further from everything.

Our suggestion

If you are unsure, pick the north or middle Hotel Zone. You will be close to the airport, the buses and the best swimming beaches.

Common questions

+How far is the Hotel Zone from the airport?

Travel Advice

Is Cancun safe for tourists?

For most visitors, yes. The Hotel Zone and main tourist areas are heavily policed and the vast majority of trips pass without incident. Most problems involve petty theft, taxi overcharging or drinking too much, not violent crime. Use common sense, book licensed transport and stay alert at night.

Comparisons

Cancun or Playa del Carmen: which is better?

Choose Cancun for bigger resort beaches, an easy airport transfer and big-night nightlife. Choose Playa del Carmen for a walkable town feel, more independent restaurants and a better base for cenotes and Cozumel. Both work well; it depends on how you like to holiday.
