What Time Does Chichén Itzá Open?
By C-Point Editorial · Published
Update: Recheck INAH visitor information and any special-operation notices before publication updates, especially around equinox dates.

For Cancun travellers, the useful answer is not just the opening hour. You also need the last-access cutoff and the time-zone difference between Cancun and Yucatán.
Normal Chichén Itzá opening hours
INAH Lugares lists the Chichén Itzá archaeological zone as open Monday to Sunday, 08:00 to 16:00, with last access at 15:00. The main INAH archaeological-zone page also lists the normal schedule as 08:00 to 16:00.
Use 08:00 as the normal opening time, but plan around the 15:00 last-access time rather than treating 16:00 as a safe arrival target.
INAH also lists a preferential attention window for agencies from 11:00 to 14:00. That is not a separate public opening time.
The Cancun time-zone catch
Chichén Itzá is in Yucatán, while Cancun is in Quintana Roo. As of 2026-10-01, CENAM lists Yucatán in Mexico’s Zona Centro, UTC-6, and Quintana Roo in Zona Sureste, UTC-5.
That means that, on 2026-10-01, 08:00 at Chichén Itzá corresponds to 09:00 in Cancun.
This matters when you book a pickup, read a tour itinerary or set a phone alarm. Confirm whether any schedule you are given is in Cancun time or Yucatán / Chichén Itzá local time.
Mexico’s current time-zone law limits seasonal time changes to specified northern-border areas, and CENAM warns that most of Mexico has not had daylight-saving changes since 2022. Do not rely on old daylight-saving assumptions for Cancun-to-Yucatán planning.
Last entry is earlier than closing
The key cutoff on the INAH Lugares visitor page is last access at 15:00. The archaeological zone’s listed closing time is 16:00, but that does not mean you can arrive at 15:55 and enter.
If you are travelling from Cancun, build your day around arriving well before the last-access time, and recheck INAH before departure for any short-notice operational changes.
Does online ticketing change the opening time?
INAH’s Chichén Itzá visitor page links to the official INAH online ticketing portal. The reviewed official source did not establish that buying online changes the site’s physical opening time or last-access cutoff.
Use online ticketing as a ticketing source, not as proof that access hours are different.
Gran Museo de Chichén Itzá hours
The Gran Museo de Chichén Itzá has its own listed hours. INAH Lugares lists the museum as open Monday to Sunday, 08:00 to 17:00, with last access at 16:00. INAH states that museum admission is included with access to the archaeological zone.
Do not assume the museum always follows the same access rules as the ruins. Special operations can shorten or otherwise change museum access.
Special dates can override the normal hours
Normal hours are not the whole story on special-operation days. INAH’s spring equinox 2026 operation is a clear example: INAH announced that Chichén Itzá would open at 09:00 on 2026-03-20, open at 08:00 on 2026-03-21 and 2026-03-22, close ticket sales and access at 16:00, evacuate at 17:30, restrict some internal areas from 15:30, shorten Gran Museo hours and suspend Serie Inicial visits.
INAH also announced a special autumn equinox 2026 operation for Chichén Itzá on 2026-09-20 and 2026-09-21.
If you are visiting around an equinox or another high-traffic event, check the current INAH notice instead of relying only on the standard schedule.
Fees are separate from hours
INAH’s visitor page says an additional extraordinary fee from the Government of the State of Yucatán must be paid, and it lists separate CULTUR parador charges in addition to the INAH admission category.
Because this page is about hours, it should not be read as a current total-price guide. Recheck the official fee information before you pay or compare tours.
Route note from the official visitor page
INAH Lugares gives the access route as Federal Highway 180 from Mérida or Cancun, then the turnoff at Pisté to the archaeological zone.
