How Do You Get to Coba From Cancun?

By C-Point Editorial · Published

Update: Recheck INAH access details, ADO schedules, Tren Maya timetables and any local Tulum-Coba connections before travel.

Coba is inland from the Riviera Maya coast, so getting there from Cancun is mainly a road-planning question: whether you drive the official route yourself, book a transfer or tour, or try to connect through Tulum by public transport.

The official route from Cancun to Coba

INAH gives the access route from Cancun as Federal Highway 307 south to Tulum, then Highway 109 toward Nuevo Xcan for 47 km to Coba. SECTUR describes the same approach and states that Tulum is 128 km south of Cancun on this access route.

That makes the official route about 175 km before local access and parking, using SECTUR's distances. For actual driving time, check live maps on the travel day because traffic, roadworks and weather can change the trip.

Best transport options

Drive yourself or book a private transfer

This is the most direct way to get from Cancun to Coba because it follows the route described by INAH and SECTUR without needing to line up a connection in Tulum. It also gives you more control over departure time, which matters because INAH lists Coba's last access at 16:00.

If you rent a car, plan the route in advance, allow extra time for the Tulum-area section and avoid relying on old travel reports for current access or parking details. The research package did not verify current Coba parking fees.

Take a tour

A tour can be the easiest option if you do not want to drive or coordinate onward transport from Tulum. It may also make sense if you want to combine Coba with Tulum or another stop in one day. Check the operator's current itinerary carefully: Coba access rules, time on site and included stops vary by tour.

Go by bus via Tulum

A public-transport trip is more complicated. As of 2026-09-29, ADO's Cancun terminal page listed Tulum among the main destinations from Cancun. As of 2026-09-10, ADO Aeropuerto said it connected Cancun Airport with Cancun Centro, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

The missing piece is the onward leg to Coba. The available research did not confirm a current direct ADO bus from Cancun to Coba. YucatanBus showed second-class Oriente connections from Coba to Tulum in about 56 minutes as of 2026-09-30, but you should verify current schedules in both directions before building a same-day plan around them.

For most visitors, bus via Tulum is practical only if the onward Coba connection is confirmed for your exact date and you have a workable return plan.

Use Tren Maya for part of the corridor

Tren Maya can help with movement along the Cancun–Tulum corridor, but it does not remove the need for onward road transport to Coba. As of the official timetable reviewed on 2026-10-01, Tren Maya listed a Cancun to Tulum Aeropuerto segment of 2h04 on circulation 301 and Cancun to Chetumal trains at 08:00 and 14:33.

Tren Maya also announced that the Cancun to Playa del Carmen route resumed on August 15, 2026, with four daily trips at relaunch. Because timetables can change, use the official Tren Maya schedule before planning a Coba day trip around the train.

What time should you leave Cancun?

Leave early enough to reach Coba well before the last-entry cutoff. INAH lists Coba as open daily from 08:00 to 17:00, with last access at 16:00 as of 2026-02-04.

An early start is especially important if you are using public transport, combining Coba with Tulum, or depending on an onward connection from Tulum. If you arrive late, you may not have enough useful time inside the archaeological zone even if you technically make last access.

Can you combine Coba and Tulum in one day?

Yes, the official route naturally passes through Tulum before continuing inland toward Coba, so combining the two can make geographic sense. The tradeoff is time: Cancun to Tulum, Tulum to Coba, site access windows and the return journey all need to fit the same day.

If your priority is Coba itself, go there first or choose transport that gets you there comfortably before the last-access window. If your priority is seeing both places without driving, a tour may be simpler than trying to coordinate public transport.

Check Coba access before you go

INAH describes Coba as a major Maya city in Quintana Roo's lake region, historically connected by an extensive network of sacbe'ob, or raised roads. Its Coba page currently notes controlled access to Nohoch Mul. That matters because older guides and videos may describe visitor access differently.

Before you travel, recheck INAH's Coba page for current opening, last access and site-access notes.

Highway assistance for drivers

SECTUR's Angeles Verdes service offers roadside assistance to travelers in Mexico through 078. The official notice says the service includes minor mechanical help, tourist orientation and highway assistance. Save the number before driving outside Cancun.
