Is Cancun safe for tourists?

The short version

Cancun receives millions of visitors a year and the overwhelming majority have no safety problems at all. The headlines you may have read about crime in Quintana Roo are real, but they rarely involve tourists going about normal holiday activities.

Where the risk actually is

  • Petty theft. Phones and bags left on the beach or on restaurant tables are the most common issue.
  • Transport. Unlicensed drivers and inflated fares cause more stress than anything else. Agree a price before you get in, or pre-book.
  • Nightlife. Most incidents in party areas are linked to heavy drinking. Watch your drink and go out with people you trust.

Simple habits that help

  1. Use your hotel safe for passports and spare cash.
  2. Carry a small amount of pesos rather than your whole budget.
  3. Use official taxis, ADO buses or pre-booked transfers.
  4. Respect red flags on the beach. Currents can be strong.

Common questions

+Is the Hotel Zone safer than downtown Cancun?

The Hotel Zone has a very visible police and security presence. Downtown is a normal working city and is fine to visit by day; use the same care you would in any large city at night.

+Is it safe to walk around at night?

Busy, well-lit parts of the Hotel Zone are generally fine. Avoid empty beaches and unlit streets after dark.

Things To Know

Can you drink the tap water in Cancun?

No. Locals do not drink tap water either. Drink bottled or purified water, which hotels and restaurants use for drinks and ice. Brushing your teeth with tap water is a personal choice; many visitors use bottled water to be safe.

Cancun Guides

Where should first-time visitors stay in Cancun?

Most first-timers are happiest in the Hotel Zone, the 22 km strip of beach resorts between the lagoon and the Caribbean. Stay at the north end (km 4 to 9) for calmer swimming and easy access to Isla Mujeres ferries, or the middle (km 9 to 12) for nightlife. Downtown is cheaper and more local but has no beach.
