How to Verify a Surgeon or Clinic in Mexico

By C-Point Editorial · Published

Update: Recheck the linked official pages if Mexican licensing, certification, or certification lists change.

Use the paper trail. In Mexico, the doctor, the specialty, the clinic, and the hospital are checked through different official sources, so one document alone is not enough.

1) Verify the surgeon’s cédula with SEP

Start with the SEP cédula portal. It can be searched by CURP or personal data. If you are booking any aesthetic procedure, SEP says to verify the cédula profesional, the specialty cédula, and current certification before proceeding.

2) Confirm specialist certification

If the doctor claims a specialty, check CONACEM’s public search for specialist certification status. CONACEM says specialist certification is valid for five years, so the status should be current.

3) Check the clinic’s COFEPRIS paperwork

Ask the clinic for its COFEPRIS aviso de funcionamiento and the name of its responsable sanitario. COFEPRIS says the aviso de funcionamiento is the notice that allows a medical office to operate legally.

4) Ask for a licencia sanitaria when surgery is involved

If the clinic performs surgery or obstetric acts, ask for a COFEPRIS licencia sanitaria. That is a separate check from the clinic’s basic operating notice.

5) Check whether the hospital is certified

The Consejo de Salubridad General keeps a public list of certified medical establishments. As of 2026-09-01, that list is public and updated on the CSG site.

6) If it is plastic surgery, verify the extra certification step

For plastic surgery, CMCPER says to have a cédula profesional, a cédula de especialidad, and a current certificate. That makes the specialty check especially important before booking.

What to ask before you pay

  • What is the doctor’s full name as it appears on the SEP cédula?
  • Is there a current specialty certification, and where can I check it?
  • Does the clinic have a COFEPRIS aviso de funcionamiento?
  • Who is the responsable sanitario?
  • If the procedure is surgical, can you show the COFEPRIS licencia sanitaria?
  • Is the hospital on the CSG certified-establishments list?

How to read the results

If the doctor is registered but the specialty is not current, stop and verify before booking. If the clinic has paperwork but the surgeon’s credentials do not match, do not treat the clinic papers as a substitute for the doctor’s registration. Each check covers a different part of legitimacy.
