Tulum’s fame is not based on one thing alone. The ruins are the core reason it stands out, but the modern destination is also marketed around beaches, cenotes and nature areas.

The main reason: a walled Maya city on the Caribbean

Tulum is best known for its archaeological zone: a fortified Maya coastal city set beside the Caribbean Sea. INAH describes Tulum as a powerful walled coastal city and notes that its wall enclosed the north, south and west sides, while the east side faces the sea.

That setting is what makes Tulum so recognizable: Maya architecture right beside the Caribbean Sea.

INAH also gives Tulum historical weight beyond the view. It calls Tulum one of the main Maya cities of the 13th and 14th centuries, says the visible buildings mainly belong to 1250–1550, and links the city’s location to trade and coastal resources. INAH also notes that Tulum has some of the best-preserved Maya mural paintings.

Beaches, cenotes and the Tulum travel brand

Tulum is also famous as a beach-and-nature destination. As of 2026-10-01, Quintana Roo tourism presents Tulum as three linked areas: the archaeological site, the hotel zone and the town. The same state tourism source promotes Tulum for beaches, lagoons, cenotes and caverns.

That is why “Tulum” can mean different things depending on the trip:

  • the ruins for history and the classic sea view;
  • the beach and hotel zone for a coastal stay;
  • the town for services, restaurants and access to the wider area;
  • cenotes, lagoons and caverns for nature-focused days.

Tulum became a Pueblo Mágico on September 25, 2015, according to Quintana Roo tourism and SECTUR. That official branding is one part of Tulum’s current tourism identity.

Protected areas add to its appeal

Tulum’s fame is also tied to protected natural areas. Tulum National Park was decreed on April 23, 1981, and CONANP lists its area as 664.32 hectares.

As of 2026-10-01, the Parque del Jaguar framework also links natural and archaeological areas in Tulum, according to federal documentation. This matters for visitors because federal materials also present Tulum as linking archaeological and environmental areas.

The wider regional nature story also includes Sian Ka’an, which UNESCO inscribed as a World Heritage site in 1987. UNESCO describes Sian Ka’an as including forests, mangroves, marshes and reef-linked marine areas.

Why people visit Tulum from Cancun

For a day or overnight trip, Tulum combines the seaside ruins, cenotes and nature-oriented side trips. It makes most sense if the seaside ruins or the broader Tulum setting are a priority.

The airport has raised Tulum’s profile

Tulum International Airport began operations on December 1, 2023, according to the Government of Mexico. As of 2026-10-01, the airport operator listed routes from Miami, Dallas, Atlanta and Houston.

The airport is not the original reason Tulum became famous, but it adds direct international access to the destination. Routes can change, so treat airport information as current only after checking the operator or airline close to travel.

Current planning notes

As of 2026-10-01, INAH lists Tulum ruins hours as 08:00 to 17:00, with last access at 15:30. INAH also lists separate INAH, GAFSACOMM and CONANP charges for Tulum.

Those operational details can change. Recheck the official INAH page before visiting the archaeological zone, and check current beach access and sea conditions separately if the beach is central to your plan. SECTUR announced new public and free beach accesses in Tulum in 2025, but practical access details should still be confirmed close to travel.

Travel Advice

Can You Visit Tulum as a Day Trip From Cancun?

Yes. Tulum is a realistic day trip from Cancun, especially if your main goal is the archaeological zone. It is not a quick outing: INAH places the site 128 km south of Cancun, and ADO lists direct Cancun Centro to Tulum buses at about 2 hours 40 minutes. Leave early and plan for the ruins plus, at most, one nearby extra stop.
