For Cancun, the safest approach is to build a kit around the medicines your group already depends on, then add basic first-aid and common over-the-counter relief. Official Mexican guidance from SEMAR, the Secretaría de Salud, SEGOB, PROFECO, and the DOF points to a three-day emergency supply that covers prescriptions, basic wound care, water, and family needs.

Start with the medicines you cannot skip

If anyone in your group takes daily medicine, prioritize it as an essential part of the kit. SEMAR specifically includes prescription medicines for heart conditions, blood pressure, and insulin in a disaster kit.

If your family includes babies, small children, older adults, or people with disabilities, include the medicines and supplies they need as well. SEGOB and PROFECO both say those needs should be part of emergency planning.

Add common over-the-counter medicines

SEMAR and the DOF emergency botiquín standard point to a basic set of symptom-relief medicines and related supplies. Useful examples include:

  • Aspirin
  • Analgesics / pain relievers
  • Antacids
  • Antihistamines
  • Antidiarrheals
  • Antiemetics
  • Anti-inflammatories
  • Oral electrolytes
  • Glucose strips

Build the first-aid side of the kit

The DOF standard for an emergency botiquín includes supplies such as:

  • Gauze
  • Cotton
  • Sterile gloves
  • Antiseptics
  • Tape
  • Elastic bandages

SEMAR also includes first-aid supplies in its disaster-kit guidance.

Don’t forget light and water

SEMAR recommends keeping a disaster kit ready for home, work, and the car for at least three days. Its list also includes lamps with extra batteries.

For water, SEMAR recommends at least 5 liters per person per day.

If tap water is uncertain during an outage

The Secretaría de Salud says water can be made safer by either:

  • boiling it for 5 minutes, or
  • adding 2 drops of cloro per liter and waiting 30 minutes

This makes water safer, but it does not guarantee it is safe in every circumstance.

Practical Cancun packing rule

For a Cancun trip, think in this order:

  1. Daily prescriptions for every person who needs them
  2. First-aid supplies
  3. Common OTC medicines for pain, stomach upset, allergies, and dehydration
  4. Water and a way to treat it if supply is uncertain
  5. Batteries, flashlight, and child- or elder-specific items if needed

Keep the kit small enough to carry, but complete enough to cover at least three days.

Yes, Cancun is a good first trip to Mexico if you want easy beach-resort logistics, a major international airport and visitor infrastructure. It is less ideal if your main goal is deep cultural immersion, historic city life or a less tourist-oriented introduction to Mexico.

Where Should First-Time Visitors Stay in Cancun?

Most first-time visitors should start with the Hotel Zone, especially for a beach-and-resort trip. Choose the north Hotel Zone around km 4 to 9 for calmer swimming and ferry access, the km 9 to 10 area for nightlife, or Downtown Cancun if city services matter more than staying on the beach.
